The Artificial Intelligence Dispatch

Forecasts suggest that by 2024, there will be more AI voice assistants than human beings on planet earth. Should we be worried?

Why is everybody talking about ChatGPT? ✍️

In a 1950s research paper, Alan Turin (often proclaimed the father of modern computer science) was looking to answer the question, “can machines think?”.

After much deliberation, he suggested, “a computer would deserve to be called intelligent if it could deceive a human into believing that it was human.”

Well ChatGPT, the latest project from OpenAI, has fooled several of us at the studio since it burst into the creative conscience last month.

What about turning text into images? 🎨

They say a picture can paint a thousand words, but what if a few words could paint a thousand pictures? Enter tools such as DALL-E and Midjourney.

With just a few carefully considered prompts, this new generation of AI imaging tools can generate complex art, designs and photography - all royalty-free.

It's another development causing a stir in the creative community, and here is journalist and filmmaker Cleo Abram to explain it all.

An experiment in restoring lost art. 🖼️

Can we train computer algorithms to restore lost works of art? And would they do a better job than humans with the same goal?

In this episode of WSJ's The Future of Everything, we hear the story of a software journey which looked to recreate Gustav Klimt's famous faculty paintings and to shed light on what they may have looked like before they were lost to a fire in the second world war.

As you will hear, the verdict is still out on whether it worked.
